ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Anchorage hockey team killed off 12 of 13 Colorado College power plays en route to a stunning 4-2 upset of the No. 3-ranked Tigers at Sullivan Arena on Friday night. The UAA victory broke a seven-game losing skid to CC as the Seawolves improved to 7-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in WCHA play. The Tigers slipped to 7-3-3 overall and 5-3-1 in league play.
Little of the game was played 5-on-5 as the Seawolves were whistled for 26 minutes worth of penalties and the Tigers 12. Of CC's 13 man-advantage situations, three were of the 5-on-3 variety.
CC's Chad Rau put the Tigers up 1-0 at 11:08 of the first period as he beat the Seawolves' Jon Olthuis just under his left arm. Eric Walsky was credited with an assist on the goal.
UAA tied things at 1-1 at 12:26 of the second as Tommy Grant sent Paul Crowder into the zone and Crowder snapped off a low wrister that beat Tiger netminder Drew O'Connell to the stick side.
The Seawolves broke on top 2-1 just 2:59 into the third period when Craig Parkinson banged home a rebound over O'Connell's left shoulder. Tyler Moir received an assist on the goal.
UAA upped its lead to 3-1 in a penalty-kill situation as Crowder got loose on a breakaway and went top shelf for the score just 29 seconds later at 3:28 of the third. Grant picked up his second helper of the night in what would be the Seawolves' first shorthander of the year.
CC took advantage of yet another power play at 10:02 of the third as Walsky scored on assists from Brian Connelly and Rau.
But with Connelly out of the net for an extra attacker, the Grant broke free at center ice and blasted an empty-netter high into the twine from the blue line to seal the deal with just 25 seconds remaining.
Olthuis was strong in goal for UAA, making 25 saves on the night in improving his record to 4-3-0 on the season. CC's O'Connell had 18 saves and is now 1-1-0 on the season.
Thanks in large measure to UAA's penchant for the penalty box, the Tigers owned a commanding 19-7 shots advantage over the game's first two periods. But the Seawolves outshot their visitors 15-8 in the third period, resulting in a final 27-22 advantage for the Tigers.
With the victory, UAA equaled its overall win total and surpassed its WCHA victory total from 2007-08. The Seawolves are now in a three-way tie for third place in the WCHA standings with 10 points, just one behind second-place CC.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena with opening faceoff set for 7:07 AST.
