ANCHORAGE ? Colorado College forward Addison DeBoer scored with 2:11 remaining on overtime Saturday to give his 3rd-ranked Tigers a 4-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Alaska Anchorage at Sullivan Arena.
UAA came up agonizingly short in its bid for a sweep despite a pair of goals from sophomore winger Tommy Grant.
The loss dropped the Seawolves to 7-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the WCHA, while the Tigers improved to 8-3-3 and 6-3-1 as they moved into second place all alone in the league standings.
After a scoreless first period, the Tigers notched the first of their two power-play goals when Chad Rau tallied a goal just 1:11 into the second. Grant then struck for the equalizer 11 minutes later, and junior Kevin Clark gave UAA the lead off a pass from freshman Curtis Leinweber at the 16:33 mark.
CC won the ensuing faceoff, however, and Bill Sweatt scored only 26 seconds later to send the game into the third deadlocked at 2-2.
CC defenseman Gabe Guentzel scored his second goal of the season, a power-play tally with 13 minutes left, to account for the third lead change of the night, and things looked bleak for the Seawolves when senior captain Mat Robinson was sent to the penalty box for holding with 6:09 remaining.
But Paul Crowder grabbed a loose puck at mid-ice on the ensuing CC power play and found Grant streaking down the right side. After a pair of strides, Grant fired a slap shot over the stick-side shoulder of CC netminder Richard Bachmann (26 saves) for the equalizer. It was Crowder's second assist of the night to bring his season total to 10.
The goal was UAA's second short-handed goal in as many nights after scoring none through the first 12 contests.
But the Tigers dominated possession in the overtime, and DeBoer ended the game with an unassisted goal when he picked up the puck behind the UAA net and stuffed it between UAA goalie Jon Olthuis (17 saves) and the left post.
Grant's goals were his team-leading ninth and 10th of the season, while Clark snapped an eight-game goal-less streak by lighting the lamp for the first time since Oct. 24 against Minnesota Duluth. It was Clark's fifth goal of the year.
The Seawolves are off next week before traveling to WCHA rival Wisconsin for a pair of games Dec. 5 and 6.
