ANCHORAGE ? St. Cloud State rallied for a pair of third-period goals to edge Alaska Anchorage 2-1 and earn a series sweep tonight at Sullivan Arena.
Despite owning a 31-13 advantage in shots, the Seawolves (7-16-7, 3-16-5 WCHA) were held in check by SCSU goalie Jase Weslosky, who recorded 30 saves, including 15 in a furious third period.
The Huskies (14-13-3, 9-11-2 WCHA), which extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) over UAA, moved to seventh in the conference standings with their third consecutive win.
Freshman goalie Bryce Christianson, who started his first game in front of the home crowd, registered 11 saves in the loss.
Freshman winger Tommy Grant broke a scoreless deadlock at the 18:14 mark of the second period by stuffing in a wraparound goal at the left post, giving UAA a 1-0 lead at the second break. Fellow rookies Sean Wiles and Nick Haddad received the assists on Grant's fourth marker of the season.
UAA nearly took a two-goal advantage into the final frame but an apparent goal midway through the period was waved off after a video replay review determined a Seawolf skater was in the crease.
SCSU capitalized on a Seawolf turnover deep in their own zone early in the third as Nick Oslund would find the back of the net 2:16 into the period knotting the game at 1-1.
Another UAA turnover at neutral ice would lead to an odd-man rush by the Huskies and the eventual game-winning goal from Matt Hartman at the 16:41 mark. Aaron Marvin recorded the lone assist on both Husky tallies.
The Seawolves, who outshot SCSU 15-4 in the final frame, generated some quality scoring chances in the third as they played the majority of the period in front of the Husky net, but were never rewarded for their efforts.
Each team went scoreless in four attempts on the power play.
Winless in their last five contests overall (0-4-1), the Seawolves were held under two goals for the seventh time in their last 12 outings.
UAA makes its final regular-season road trip next weekend as it heads to the Mile High City for a series against Denver.
