UAA upsets No. 7 Denver, 3-2 in overtime

DENVER, Colo. - Freshman Curtis Leinweber scored the game-winner with just 17.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lead the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves to a stunning 3-2 win over the No. 7 Denver Pioneers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday night at Magness Arena.

The Pioneers (16-8-3, 12-6-2 WCHA) recorded two early goals in the first period, before UAA's junior Trevor Hunt and senior Mat Robinson each score a goal in the second and third period, respectively, to send the game into overtime in front of 5,424 spectators.

Normally a defenseman, Leinweber skated as a forward on Saturday and gave the Seawolves (9-11-4, 6-10-4 WCHA) their first overtime win since March 10, 2007 against Minnesota.. Sophomore Craig Parkinson was credited with an assist on the game-winner.

The Pioneers opened up the first period with a pair of goals one minute and 17 seconds apart from each other, to give Denver a 2-0 lead. Brian Gifford scored his second goal of the season by sending a back-hander top-shelf over UAA's goaltender Bryce Christianson's blocker side at 7 :42. Captain defender J.P. Testwuide added his third tally of the season with a slap shot from the blueline, through traffic to the net at 8:49.

The Seawolves' junior Trevor Hunt ended the DU shutout for the second time this weekend, with his second power play goal of the season at 10:43 of the second period. Captain Mat Robinson sent a blueline pass to Hunt, who found an open lane and fired the puck by the Pioneer's netminder Marc Cheverie, dropping Denver's lead to one.

The second period ended with a five-minute major penalty whistled on junior Kevin Clark with two minutes, seven seconds left in the period. Clark was disqualified from the game for boarding after sending DU's Chris Nutini into the boards behind the Pioneer's net.

The Seawolves trailed for the majority of the third period before Robinson picked up his second point of the evening with a shorthanded goal at 17:33 of the period, to even the game, 2-2. Junior Paul Crowder crashed the net and sent a cross pass to Robinson who sent the equalizer to the back of the net, sending the game into overtime. Nick Haddad picked up the second assist on the play.

The Pioneers outshot the Seawolves 32-19, including posting 11 more shots on net in the first period (14-3). Christianson was credited with the win with 30 saves throughout the 65 minutes of play, boosting his record to 4-4-3. Cheverie recorded the loss with 16 saves.

UAA's special teams stepped up tonight, recording their best penalty kill percentage of the season - stopping the Pioneers on nine power plays.  Keeping the Pioneers scoreless on the power play marks the first time the Seawolves were able to stop a conference team from scoring on the man advantage. UAA was 1-5 on power plays.

The Seawolves picked up two points in the WCHA conference standings, but remain in 9th-place with 16 points, three behind St. Cloud State. Denver holds on to the top place in the conference with 26 points, one over North Dakota.

UAA will return to the Sullivan Arena on Feb. 6-7 when they play host to St. Cloud State. The game is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. on both evenings.
