Spikers extend lead with win at WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Sophomore Jackie Matthisen pounded 18 kills and made a career-high 19 digs against her former team Thursday to boost the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its eighth straight victory, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20, over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (18-7, 10-2 GNAC) – ranked No. 5 in today's latest West Region poll – also extended their lead to one and a half matches in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference race thanks to Seattle Pacific's 3-1 loss at Montana State Billings earlier in the evening.

UAA won with another balanced statistical effort, getting 14 kills and 10 digs from sophomore McKenzie Moss, 13 kills (.400 att%) and two big solo blocks from Cortney Lundberg, and 48 assists from the league's leading setter, senior Calli Scott. Senior libero Stacie Meisner patrolled the back row for a team-high 20 digs, while freshman Shelby Hollister tied her best effort with four aces.

Western Oregon (7-16, 4-8) was led by 18 kills from Samantha Ward, while Irene Walters had 12 kills and 17 digs for the defending league champs.

After losing a 22-20 lead in the first set and trailing 16-20 in the second, things looked bleak for the visitors. But UAA got a kill from Scott to start a 5-0 run, and Moss and Lundberg combined for four kills in the final five points to even the match.

UAA trailed 11-17 midway through the third before rallying yet again. Matthisen, who played her freshman season at WOU in 2007, kick-started the comeback with three straight kills. Then, facing a 20-22 deficit, freshman Marie Borowikow ripped one of her six kills, and Moss followed with two more to highlight a 5-0, set-ending run.

The Seawolves took control at the start of the fourth set with an early 11-4 advantage and hung on despite a late rally by the Wolves.

UAA swept the season series from WOU for the first time since 2004 and evened the all-time series between the schools at 10 matches apiece.

The Seawolves improved to 6-1 in GNAC road matches and now have a chance to tie their longest winning streak this decade with a victory Saturday night at Saint Martin's (3-18, 0-12) in Lacey, Wash. That match begins at 6 p.m. ADT and can be followed via free live video at www.greatnorthwest.tv.
