Denver outlasts UAA for 3-2 WCHA win

ANCHORAGE - Despite goals by junior forward Sean Wiles and junior defenseman Luka Vidmar, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves fell to the No. 2/3 Denver Pioneers, 3-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday night at the Sullivan Arena.

The Pioneers (5-2-1, 4-0-1 WCHA) added three goals, sandwiched between Wiles and Vidmar's tallies, to stay undefeated in league play and take over the top position in the WCHA with 9 points. The Seawovles (3-6-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) maintain a tie with Michigan Tech in ninth with two points.

The Seawolves got on the board with Wiles' first goal of the season at 13:22 of the second period. Freshman forward Mickey Spencer added his second helper of the season, while forward freshman Daniel Naslund registered his third assist of the season.

UAA's lead was short lived as senior goaltender Jon Olthuis saved a shot by DU's Jesse Martin before an errant puck bounced off a Seawolf into the net at 12:11. Martin was credited with the unassisted, shorthanded goal.

The Pioneers extended their lead to two with a 5-on-3 power play tally by senior Rhett Rakhshani with 4:14 left in the second. Sophomore Joe Colborne and junior Anthony Maiani picked up the assists.

Captain Rakhshani added DU's final tally at 3:51 of the third frame of play.

With Olthuis on the bench for for an extra attacker, Vidmar struck with 36.9 seconds left in the game for the final score. In the middle of the DU zone, junior forward Craig Parkinson slid the puck to the blue line, where Vidmar sent a wrist shot  through traffic by rookie goalie Adam Murray. Junior defenseman Kane Lafranchise was credited with the second assist.

The Seawolves outshot the Pioneers 24-19, including 10 shots on net in the third period. Olthuis registered 16 saves in the loss, dropping his season record to 2-3-0. Murray (2-2-1) picked up the win in his hometown with 22 saves.

The Pioneers were tagged for six penalties, serving 12 minutes, while UAA spent 14 minutes in the box on seven occasions. UAA was held scoreless on the man-advantage on five opportunities.

The Seawolves and the Pioneers will have a rematch Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:07 p.m.
