- Three special team goals in the first period gave the No. 20 St. Cloud State Huskies a Western
Collegiate Hockey Association win over host Alaska Anchorage, 3-1 on Friday
night at the Sullivan Arena.
The Seawolves (6-11-0, 4-9-0 WCHA) lone tally of the night was netted by junior
forward Sean Wiles, while UAA was on the penalty kill at 16:56 of the second. A
native of Beliot, Wis., Wiles received his sixth goal of the
season and eighth point in the last seven games played. Junior forward Nick Haddad assisted on Wiles first shorthanded goal of his career.
A season-low attendance of 2,596 watched as the Seawolves allowed two
power-play goals and a shorthanded goal in the first period.
Scoring on the man advantage for the Huskies (7-6-2, 6-4-1 WCHA) was senior
Ryan Lasch at 7:42 and junior Nick Oslund at 12:28. St. Cloud State
was on the power play at 10:57 after senior forward Kevin Clark was tagged for
checking from behind and received a five-minute major and a 10 minute game misconduct.
SCSU's shorthanded tally was posted by sophomore Jordy Christian with 1:18 left
in the frame.
After peppering senior goaltender Jon Olthuis (14 saves) with 14 shots in the
first period, the Huskies were held to two shots in the second period and one
in the third. The Seawolves posted a season-low tying three shots in the first
period for total of 16.
Olthuis dropped his season record to 3-6-0, while rookie netminder Mike Lee
(3-4-2) registered 15 saves en route to the victory.
UAA was scoreless on five power play opportunities, while
the Huskies were 2-7. The Seawolves logged in 33 minutes of penalties on 11
infractions, compared to SCSU's 10 penalties for 20 minutes.
UAA continues to hold down No. 8 in the WCHA standings with
eight points. The Huskies move into a four-way tie for third place with 13
points.
The Seawolves and the Huskies will reunite tomorrow night at
7:07 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena.
