ANCHORAGE - It was a shorthanded night all-around in UAA's heart-stopping 2-1 win over St. Cloud State in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena. The victory lifted the Seawolves to 10-12-4 overall and 7-11-4 in WCHA play while the Huskies are now 15-13-2 overall and 10-11-1 in the conference.
Craig Parkinson's shorthanded goal at 11:35 of the third period proved to be the game-winner on a night that the Seawolves' top three scorers were healthy scratches. Meanwhile a tenacious Seawolf defense - despite six St. Cloud State power plays - blocked 19 shots on night and allowed just 16 shots on goal.
Josh Lunden assisted on Parkinson's shorty ? UAA's fourth of the season ? which gave the Seawolves' their first lead of the weekend series. But it was far from over as UAA was forced to kill off a 5-on-3 Husky power play just minutes later.
After giving up a goal on just St. Cloud's second shot of the night, UAA sophomore netminder Bryce Christianson was strong in net as he shut out the Huskies the rest of the way in picking up his fifth win of the season. SCSU's Jase Weslosky (13-9-1) took the loss in goal for the Huskies.
The Huskies went up 1-0 at 11:06 of the first on a power-play goal by Garrett Roe from the point. He took a pass from Garrett Raboin and beat a screened UAA netminder high to the glove side on a shot that nicked the crossbar on the way in.
UAA's August Aiken made it 1-1 at 18:39 of the second period when he banged home a rebound from a scrum in front of the St. Cloud net. It was Aiken's first career goal at UAA since joining team at semester in January. Curtis Leinweber and Matt Robinson were credited with assists on the power play tally.
UAA outshot the Huskies 25-16 for the game. SCSU was 1-for-6 on the power play wile UAA went 1-for-4.
The Seawolves will travel to Minneapolis next weekend to take on Minnesota on Feb. 13-14 in a WCHA series.
