ANCHORAGE – The Alaska
Anchorage Seawolves split the series with No. 7/8 Colorado College
after posting a 2-1 upset over the Tigers in a Western Collegiate Hockey
Association game on Saturday evening at the Sullivan Arena.
The Seawolves (9-14-1, 7-12-1 WCHA) struck with an
even-strength goal in the first period, before both teams netted a power-play
goal in the second. UAA and Colorado
College (14-9-3, 10-7-3
WCHA) then went scoreless in the third for the 2-1 final.
Giving UAA the first goal of the night was junior forward
Tommy Grant, who found the back of the net with just 59 seconds remaining in
the first frame. Senior Kevin Clark and junior defenseman Kane Lafranchise
assisted on the helper.
The Seawolves took a 2-0 lead at 8:53 of the second period when
junior forward Sean Wiles and Lafranchise fed freshman forward Alex Gellert his
second goal of the season.
Less than four minutes after Gellert's goal, the Tigers
capitalized on a four-on-three situation at 12:45 of the frame. CC's senior
Addison DeBoer was credited with the goal, bringing the Tigers within one.
The teams combined for 13 shots on net in the third period,
but neither was able to infiltrate.
Picking up his third win in four games was senior goaltender
Jon Olthuis. Olthuis registered 16 saves after three periods, improving his
record to 6-8-1. Rookie goaltender Joe Howe (13-8-3) blocked 20 Seawolf shots.
Both teams took advantage on one-of-four power-play
opportunities and posted identical 18-36 penalty numbers – with the majority of
the minutes coming in the second period due to multiple roughing calls.
The Seawolves remain in eighth place in the conference
standings with 15 points, one shy of Minnesota
(16). CC drops to a two-way tie for fourth with Wisconsin (23 points).
The Seawolves will continue their home stand with a league
series against the Gophers on Jan. 29-30. The games are scheduled to commence
at 7:07 p.m. AST on both nights.
