ANCHORAGE – Goals by senior forwards Tommy Grant and Craig
Parkinson helped the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves tie the Minnesota State
Mavericks, 2-2 in overtime in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game at
the Sullivan Arena on Saturday evening.
The Seawolves (1-5-2, 0-3-1 WCHA) held a 2-1 advantage with five
minutes left in regulation when MSU's Eriah Hayes
netted the game-tying goal, sending the game into extra minutes.
The Mavericks (2-2-4, 2-2-2 WCHA) were the first to strike with a goal by Corey
Leivermann at 4:32 of the opening stanza, but the Seawovles wouldn't falter and
at 8:39 of the second frame. Grant knotted the game at 1-1 with a five-hole
strike. Junior defenseman Curtis Leinweber and freshman forward Justin
Kirchhevel – who scored UAA's only goals in the 3-2 loss on Friday night –
earned the helpers.
The Seawolves would take the lead at 3:17 of the third
period with Parkinson's second goal of the season and first power-play tally of
the year. Freshman forwards Matt Bailey and Jordan Kwas assisted on the play.
Hayes would score the final goal of the game at 15:00 of the
third on the man advantage.
For the second consecutive game, freshman goaltender Rob
Gunderson got the starting call between the pipes, making 21 saves. MSU's Phil
Cook stopped 29 shots. The Seawolves outshot the Mavericks for the second straight
night, 31-23.
UAA was 1 of 7 on the man advantage, while MSU was 1 of 4. The Mavs
were tagged for seven penalties, serving 14 minutes, compared to UAA's 4-for-8.
The Seawolves will be idle next week and will be able to
prepare for WCHA newcomer Bemidji State on Nov. 12-13. UAA will face the Beavers
for the first time in program history at the Bemidji Regional Event Center.
