COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A Colorado College goal in the beginning
of the second and an empty-netter in the final minutes lifted the Tigers over
the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 2-0, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association
game at the World Arena on Saturday evening.
The Tigers (6-7-1, 3-6-0 WCHA) opened the scoring early in
the second frame and held on to the 1-0 lead throughout the rest of the contest
until the Seawolves (4-8-2, 3-6-1 WCHA) pulled netminder Rob Gunderson with two
minutes left in the game and CC recorded the empty netter a minute later.
The opening stanza ended scoreless, with CC holding a 7-5
edge on shots before the Tigers' Archie Skalbeck ended the stalemate with just
2:08 expired on the clock in the second frame. Teb Behrend was credited with
the helper on the game-winning goal.
The Seawolves and the Tigers battled back and forth over the
next 36 minutes of play before UAA head coach Dave Shyiak pulled Gunderson at
2:07 for the extra attacker. The Seawolves were able to keep the puck in the
Tiger zone for almost an entire minute before William Rapuzzi won a faceoff and
claimed the empty netter at 19:06.
Throughout the third frame, UAA peppered CC goalie Joe Howe
with 13 shots, including multiple scoring chances, but Howe was solid, handing
the Seawolves their third shutout of the season.
Overall, UAA out shot CC 26-20 as Gunderson (3-5-1) made 18
saves in the loss and Howe improved his record to 5-6-1 with the win.
Both teams were scoreless on the man advantage, failing to
capitalize on five power-play opportunities apiece. CC and UAA were both sent
to the box on five occasions, serving 15 minutes.
UAA will return home for two back-to-back WCHA series – first
against Wisconsin on Dec. 3-4, followed by Denver on Dec. 10-11. The puck drops
at 7:07 p.m. for all four games.
