Badgers gain series split with 'Wolves

ANCHORAGE - No. 15-ranked Wisconsin took advantage of a season-high 12 Alaska Anchorage penalties with three power-play tallies en route to a 3-1 win over the Seawolves Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena and gain a split of  their two-game WCHA series.

The Badgers improved to 8-7-3 overall and 4-6-2 WCHA mark, while the Seawolves are now 5-9-2 overall and 4-7-1 in league play.

The series split was the fourth in a row for the Seawolves, which will continue their homestand next week by hosting Denver on Dec. 10-11 at the Sullivan.

After a scoreless first period the Badgers got on the board with two second-period power play goals.  Wisconsin's Justin Schultz scored on the man advantage at 5:59 and Craig Smith added another power play tally at 19:08 to give the Badgers a 2-0 lead. The Badgers entered the game with No. 3-ranked power play in nation at 29 percent.

Wisconsin carried that lead into the third when Seawolves pulled their goalie for an extra attacker at the 10:58 mark. The gamble paid off as UAA's Tommy Grant lit the lamp at 13:48, tallying his sixth goal of the season. Jordan Kwas was credited with an assist on the goal.

But UAA was unable to get the equalizer and, with the Seawolves down a man once again, the Badgers' Schultz got an empty-netter just prior to the final horn.

The Badgers owned a 29-18 shots-on-goal advantage - nine shots coming via their eight power plays. UAA was 0-for-6 on the power play.

Wisconsin's Scott Gudmandson was credited with 17 saves in picking up the win in goal for the Badgers. Despite the loss, UAA's Rob Gunderson  (4-6-1) had another strong showing for the Seawolves in goal, finishing with 26 saves.
