Schallinger finishes ninth at NCAAs

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman Michael Schallinger received his first career All-American honor in the Nordic race Thursday at the 2010 NCAA Skiing Championships at Howelsen Hill Ski Area.

 

At the halfway mark of the championships, the Seawolves maintain their seventh place team ranking with 233 points. DenverColorado (351). New Mexico (319) moves up one slot to third, while Utah (300.5) falls to fourth. The East's Vermont (287.5) and Dartmouth (275) finished the day in fifth and sixth, respectively. continues to lead the field with 420 points over host

 

Schallinger, a native of Vachendorf, Germany, paced the Seawolves on Day 2 with a ninth-place finish in the 10K classical. The rookie was clocked at 30 minutes, 11.0 seconds, helping UAA to sixth with 53 points.

 

Sophomore Lex Treinen (30:50.0) and senior Tor Christopherson (32:24.3) wrapped up UAA's men's participants, finishing the race in 21st place and 37th, respectively.

 

On the women's side, the Seawolf pack was led by sophomore Laura Rombach in the 5K classical. A native of Neukirch, Germany, Rombach crossed the finish line in 12th place at 17:37.0.

 

Two positions back, classmate Steffi Hiemer finished 14th at 17:38.9 and sophomore Jaime Bronga was 25th with an interval-start time of 18:41.4. The trio of sophomore posted UAA's most points of the championships thus far, finishing fourth with 69 points.

 

Schallinger joins rookie Andreas Adde and sophomore Alex Parker, who each received an All-America honor in the giant slalom races on Wednesday.

 

Taking the women's individual title was DU's Antje Maempel (16:03.4), while CU's Matt Gelso on the men's title (29.25.5).

 

The championships will return to Mt. Werner on Friday with the slalom races being held at night, starting at 4:15 p.m. AST with the men's races. The meet will conclude on Saturday with the 20/15K freestyle races, commencing at 7 a.m. AST.
