#12 UAA handles Wildcats, 68-45

ANCHORAGE – Tijera Mathews led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points and point guard Kaitlin McBride delivered a big all-around performance Saturday as the 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team earned a 68-45 victory over Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (13-3, 4-1 GNAC) got nine points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals from McBride, while junior center Hanna Johansson added 11 points, three assists and three steals.

The Wildcats (5-7, 0-5) were led by 12 points from forward Sophie Russell but were hurt by 36 turnovers.

UAA took control with an early 9-0 run and took a 38-24 lead at halftime. The visitors from Ellensburg, Wash., crept within 11 points twice early in the second half but could get no closer as the Seawolves won for the eighth straight time in the series.

Sophomore forward Alysa Horn scored all 10 of her points in the second half, while senior guard Sarah Herrin added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for UAA.

Meanwhile, Mathews, a junior transfer from Antelope Valley (Calif.) College, notched her best scoring night as a Seawolf thanks to 4-of-7 three-point shooting. The Palmdale, Calif., native added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Seawolves return to the road next week for games at Western Oregon (Thur., Jan. 13) and Saint Martin's (Sat., Jan. 15). Both of those contests begin at 6 p.m. AST.
