Registe qualifies for finals with top jump

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Former All-American David Registe posted the best jump in the qualification round of the men's long jump at the 2011 Pan America Games on Monday with a leap of 25 feet, 10.25 inches (7.88 meters). Registe will compete in the finals on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 3:05 p.m. ADT.

Registe (Colony HS), who is competing for Dominica where he holds citizenship, easily qualified for the finals in the long jump with the top jump of 22 participants that competed in the qualification heats. The 2008 NCAA Div. II long jump champion, Registe's nearest competitor was Collister Fahie of Virgin Islands, who posted a jump of 25-10.

 “I am very excited for tomorrow, but the important thing is to forget about today, because today was simply qualifying,” said Registe. “Tomorrow everyone is even again and I expect the competition to be close.”

Registe, who also competed at the 2011 Central American & Caribbean Games, owns a career-best leap of 25-11.50, set in May of 2009 at the NCAA Championships.

The 2011 Pan Am Games started on Oct. 14 and will go through Oct. 30, with the track & field portion from Oct. 23-30. The games feature summer and winter sports and are the second-largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympics. The competition is held every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games.
