Mavericks forge 5-5 tie with Seawolves

MANKATO, Minn. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves capped off a three-point weekend against the Minnesota State Mavericks with a 5-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association tie at the Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday evening.

The Seawolves (5-7-2, 2-7-1 WCHA) surrendered a 5-1 lead halfway through the second period by allowing the Mavericks (3-10-1, 2-7-1 WCHA) to score four unanswered goals – including three power-play tallies – throughout the second and third frames.

UAA, which was outshot 46-13, was awarded a two-minute power play in overtime, but was unable to capitalize on the 5-on-4 advantage, keeping the Seawolves and Mavericks tied for 11th in the 12-team conference with five points apiece.

Following a 1-1 score halfway through the opening stanza, the Seawolves used tallies by sophomore forwards Brett Cameron and Jordan Kwas, junior forward Mickey Spencer and senior defenseman Curtis Leinweber to take a seemingly commanding 5-1 lead on just seven shots on net.

Leinweber, who also netted the opening power-play goal at 6:47, earned his third goal of the series at 7:31 of the second, also on the man advantage. In addition to Leinweber, Cameron, Kwas and Spencer each furnished two goals in the MSU series. UAA beat MSU 5-4 on Friday.

The Mavericks took control of Saturday's game in the final 30 minutes of regulation, getting two goals by J.P. Lafontaine and one from Eriah Hayes, who was ejected from the game at 2:31 of the third. MSU's Joe Schiller collected the game-tying goal at 10:24 of the third.

Hayes wasn't the only skater to receive a game misconduct, as the Seawolves' Spencer and junior forward Mitch Bruijsten were each ejected for spearing and checking-from-behind, respectively. Overall the Seawolves were tagged for a season-high 48 minutes of penalty time, to MSU's 27. The Mavericks were successful on 3-of-11 power-play attempts, while UAA was 2-for-5.

Sophomore goaltender Rob Gunderson (2-3-2) was peppered with a season-high 46 shots – the most allowed by UAA since Jan. 28 – and made 41 saves. The Mavericks' Phil Cook (2 saves) was chased from net following UAA's final tally, giving Evan Karambelas (6 saves) the first minutes in his college career.

Freshman forward Eric Scheid produced his first collegiate multi-point night with two assists. The Blaine, Minn., native has recorded 1-4—5 totals in the last five games.

UAA's 13 shots on goal were a season low.

The Seawolves, who are 2-1-1 in the last four outings, will return to the Sullivan Arena, Dec. 2-3, when they host the North Dakota Fighting Sioux for a WCHA series. Both games are scheduled to commence at 7:07 p.m. AST.
