Ranked CC earns WCHA split with UAA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No.6-ranked Colorado College Tigers earned the Western Collegiate Hockey Association split and 4-3 victory over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves after scoring the game-winning goal with just 2.8 seconds left in regulation at the Colorado Springs World Arena on Saturday.

Despite a 3-1 lead early in the second period, the Seawolves surrendered three unanswered goals – two in the second and one in the third – to end the 2011 calendar year with a 6-10-2 overall record and a 3-10-1 conference slate. The Tigers (9-5-0, 7-5-0 WCHA) are now tied with North Dakota at No. 4 in the league, while UAA is 11th with seven points.

With the game deadlocked at 3-3 since the middle of the second period, the Seawolves and the Tigers were thought to be headed into extra minutes, but CC's Michael Boivin had other plans as he sent a wrister through traffic and by a screened Rob Gunderson with under three seconds left in the game.

The first 20 minutes of play were the opposite of last night's opening stanza with UAA taking a 2-0 lead before letting Colorado College cut the lead in half. Freshman forward Eric Scheid unlocked the scoring on Austin Coldwell's rebound at 7:45, before sophomore Brett Cameron gave the Seawolves a two-goal lead at 15:30.

Thirty-two seconds later Boivin ended the shutout with his first of the night and a 2-1 score going into the first intermission.

With just two minutes expired on the clock in the second frame, Cameron netted his second of the night for his first multi-goal game of his career. Senior Curtis Leinweber collected his fourth point of the series with the first assist while sophomore Jordan Kwas received the second for a career-and team-high point streak.

The Tigers, who are nationally ranked in the top five on the man advantage, knotted the game at 3-3 following a power-play tally at 4:04 by Rylan Schwartz and a shorthanded goal at 11:13 by David Civitarese.

Gunderson (3-5-2) faced 40 shots, stopping 36 in the loss, while CC's Josh Thorimbert got the starting nod tonight, making 23 saves. The Seawolves allowed a season-high-tying 20 shots in the first period to their own eight, before being outshot 11-7 in the second and winning the SOG battle in the third, 11-9.

The Seawolves were unable to capitalize on three power-play opportunities – including one with 3:37 left to play – breaking a five-game streak of doing so. The Tigers struck on 1-for-5 man advantages. UAA spent 10 minutes in the box to CC's six.

UAA skated without defensemen Brad Gorham and Derek Docken – both missing their first of the season – due to concussion-like injuries on Friday evening.  Suiting up for his first game of the season was sophomore Andrew Pickering, while senior co-captain Chris Crowell was injured in the first period and didn't return for the remainder of the game.

The Seawolves will go on a 34-day break before returning to WCHA play. UAA will be on the road against Michigan Tech on Jan. 13-14 and against Wisconsin on Jan. 20-21 before returning to the Sullivan Arena to host Denver on Jan. 27-28.
