#10 Seawolves stifle Nanooks, 78-29

FAIRBANKS – Senior center Hanna Johansson posted a double-double and the 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rode a dominating defensive effort to a 78-29 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at the Patty Center on Saturday.

In addition to 14 points and 10 rebounds from Johansson, the Seawolves (5-2, 1-0 GNAC) also got 13 points from junior guard Haley Holmstead and 12 points off the bench from junior forward Alysa Horn.

The Nanooks (3-6, 0-1) were led by eight points from starting forward Jacqueline Lovato, who was the only UAF player to connect on more than one field goal.

UAA's defensive effort equaled a school record for points allowed against a fellow Division II opponent, previously accomplished in a 77-29 home win over UAF on Feb. 19, 1994. It was UAA's largest margin of victory in 42 all-time meetings in Fairbanks and the second-largest in 85 all-time contests against its oldest rival.

With UAA leading 11-8, UAF's Autumn Green sank a short jumper in the lane to slice her team's deficit to one at the 13:35 mark, but the Nanooks would not score another field goal for nearly 20 minutes on the clock. The Seawolves finished the first half with a 27-6 surge and held a 51-15 lead before UAF struck again from the field on Benissa Bulaya's three-pointer with 13:57 remaining in the game.

UAA set GNAC league-game records for fewest field goals allowed (7) and lowest opponent field-goal percentage (.146, 7 of 48), forcing 28 Nanooks turnovers in the process.

Tijera Mathews was the fourth Seawolf in double figures with 11 points, while starting forward Kaylie Robison came close to another double-double with seven points and nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Gritt Ryder dished a game-high five assists for UAA.

The Seawolves return to non-conference action next week when they host West Region opponents Academy of Art (Calif.) and Hawaii-Hilo in the AT&T Hoops Classic at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
