Women handle Crusaders, move on to semis

ANCHORAGE – Kaitlin McBride scored 22 points and Hanna Johansson posted a double-double Monday as 19th-ranked Alaska Anchorage posted a 64-50 victory over Northwest Nazarene in the quarterfinals of the inaugural Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championships at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (24-6), the tournament's No. 2 seed, got 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from Johansson, plus 13 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Alysa Horn as they advanced to the semifinals, earning the right to host longtime rival Seattle Pacific on Wednesday evening.

The Crusaders (14-13), the No. 7 seed, were led by 14 points from center Beth Johnson and an 11-point, 10-rebound performance from reserve Chelsie Luke as their season came to an end.

UAA took control early behind its league-leading defense, forging a 22-6 advantage on a feed from McBride (5 assists) to Johansson with 6:25 on the clock. The visitors from Nampa, Idaho, hit back-to-back three-pointers to get back into the game, trailing just 27-17 at halftime, but the Seawolves started the second half with a 7-0 run fueled by Johansson and Tijera Mathews , and the Crusaders were never able to get within single digits.

Mathews had eight points, tied her career-high with six rebounds, and set a career-high with four blocked shots. McBride equaled her career-high in blocks with three as they Seawolves posted a season-high nine as a team.

In earning their third win against NNU this year, UAA held the Crusaders to 31 percent shooting and outrebounded them 43-24.

NOTES: Aden tied former teammate Rebecca Kielpinski (2005-09) for the most games played in program history with her 126th outing in Green & Gold ... Aden extended her school record with her 107th victory in a UAA uniform, while Johansson tied for No. 3 on the women's basketball all-time wins list, matching Robin Graul (1985-89) and Diane Dobrich (1986-90) with her 79th triumph in a UAA uniform ... Johansson tied Horn for the team lead with her fourth double-double of the season ... McBride tied her own team season-high her 10 free throws made; she also made 10 at Western Oregon on Jan. 13.
