Robison, Seawolves fend off Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Kaylie Robison had 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench Thursday to lead a balanced effort as the 15th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team recorded a 63-48 victory over Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (18-5, 9-3 GNAC), ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II West Region, also got nine points and nine rebounds from junior center Hanna Johansson, plus nine points from junior forward Tijera Mathews.

The Wildcats (6-12, 1-10) were led by 10 points from forward Sophie Russell, while reserve forward Stacy Albrecht added six points and nine rebounds.

CWU kept things close early, leading 12-11 midway through the first half, but UAA took over at that point with the next 15 points and led 33-17 at halftime. The home team sliced its deficit to 40-31 with 13:38 remaining before the Seawolves used a 13-2 spurt to ice the contest.

UAA led 63-38 with 3:18 on the clock before CWU closed with the final 10 points. The win was the Seawolves' ninth straight over the Wildcats and their fourth in a row in Ellensburg.

Robison, a 6-0 junior forward, tied her career-high in scoring with 4-of-6 shooting from the field and set a career-high with her dozen boards. It was the Utah native's third double-double of the year but her first since Nov. 13.

“Kaylie really gave us a lift tonight with her energy and her smart play on both ends of the court,” said UAA head coach Tim Moser. “I was really proud of our team effort tonight. This was what we envisioned coming into the season as far as a balanced attack and I hope we can keep this up through the stretch run.”

Eight Seawolves scored five or more points Thursday, including seven apiece from senior guard Sarah Herrin (2-5 3FGs) and junior guard Tanee' Denson-Griffin (5-5 FT). Senior guard Nikki Aden had five points, six rebounds and three assists without a turnover, while senior point guard Kaitlin McBride had five points, six assists and just one turnover.

The Seawolves forced the Wildcats into 21 turnovers and 32.1 percent shooting as they held their opponent under 50 points for the second straight game and the ninth time this year.

The victory gives UAA a one-and-a-half game lead over Seattle Pacific for second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

UAA faces a tough test Saturday when it finishes its road trip with a 5 p.m. AST tip-off against Northwest Nazarene (12-8, 7-5 GNAC) in Nampa, Idaho.
