Huskies handle Seawolves, 6-2

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves returned to Western Collegiate Hockey Association play following a 33-day break with a 6-2 loss by the Michigan Tech Huskies at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Friday evening.

Despite rookie Derek Docken giving the Seawolves (6-11-2, 3-11-1 WCHA) the first goal of the game, the Huskies (10-11-1, 7-7-1 WCHA) came back with five of their own for a commanding 5-1 lead. Junior Tyler Currier closed the gap to three in the end of the second, before MTU gained more cushion in the final frame.

After missing UAA's last outing on Dec. 10 against Colorado College with a concussion, Docken returned to the lineup in full force, putting the Seawolves on the board early with his first career tally. Docken's goal came at 2:24 on the first collegiate point of freshman Andrew Pettitt, who was making his sixth appearance for the Green & Gold.

It wasn't long before the Huskies responded with two even-strength tallies by Tanner Kero and Chad Pietila at 3:32 and 12:02, respectively, for a one-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.

Following the break, Michigan Tech took control of the game with two back-to-back goals within just two minutes of play. The 4-1 lead led sixth-year bench boss Dave Shyiak to pull sophomore goaltender Chris Kamal in favor of senior netminder Dusan Sidor, who made just his second entrance of his college career.

MTU was able to convert on another strike at 17:33, before Currier netted his second of the season with just 53 seconds left in the period. Sophomore Brett Cameron and senior Curtis Leinweber were credited with helpers on the play.

The Huskies added the final tally in the last five minutes of the game for the 6-2 final.

MTU held a slight lead on shots, edging UAA, 29-27. Both teams went scoreless on the man advantage, with the Seawolves going 0-for-5 and the Huskies going 0-for-4. Kamal made 10 saves in the loss, while Sidor made 13 in his season debut. MTU's Josh Robinson made 25 saves for the win.

The teams will rematch tomorrow at 3 p.m. AST.
