Wisconsin edges UAA with late goal

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin's Justin LaBate scored with just over four minutes remaining Saturday to lift his team to a 3-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Alaska Anchorage at the Kohl Center.

The Seawolves (6-14-2, 3-14-1 WCHA) got second-period goals from freshman Austin Coldwell and senior Curtis Leinweber but could not break through against the Badgers (12-10-2, 7-9-2), remaining winless in Madison since 2005.

Sophomore Chris Kamal made 26 saves for the Seawolves, who held the Badgers to 0-for-2 on the power play. Joel Rumpel, who earned a 4-0 shutout in Friday's contest, made 25 stops to earn the win in net.

After a scoreless first period, Coldwell broke through for the Seawolves, beating UW netminder Joel Rumpel on a one-timer from straight away. Defenseman Scott Warner provided a pinpoint feed on the power play for his team-high eighth assist. It was the second career goal for Coldwell, a defenseman from Vancouver, Wash.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Badgers answered with a goal by Tyler Barnes 16 seconds later, followed by a strike from Derek Lee at the 4:55 mark.

The Seawolves then made it four goals in a 3-minute, 15-second span when Leinweber took a pass from Quinn Sproule deep in the Badger zone and eased a backhand over the glove of a sprawling Rumpel at the 6:51 mark. The tally tied Leinweber with Mitch Bruijsten for the team lead with seven goals, while putting him atop the Seawolves with 12 points.

After a hard-hitting first 15 minutes of the third, the Badgers broke through with the game-winner when Justin Schultz – the nation's leading scorer among defensemen – streaked down the ice and appeared ready to attempt a wrap-around when he flicked the puck back to LaBate for the game-winner.

The Seawolves pulled Kamal with 1:16 left but could not beat Rumpel.

UAA's loss was its fifth straight, all on the road and all in WCHA play.

The Seawolves return home for three straight home series, beginning next week when they take on nationally ranked Denver at the Sullivan Arena, Jan. 27-28. Both contests start at 7:07 p.m. AST.
