FAIRBANKS – Sophomore Scott Allen furnished two goals and an assist, while rookie Blake Tatchell netted two goals to lift Alaska Anchorage over Merrimack College, 6-3 in Game 3 of the fifth annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush on Saturday at the Carlson Center.

The Seawolves (2-1-1) took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first two periods of play – three in the first and one in the second – before a tic-tac-toe third period with Merrimack (1-2-0) scoring three and UAA adding two more.

UAA's scoring frenzy started when Allen, who was named to the all-tournament team, picked up a Merrimack turnover along the boards and found Tatchell for a 1-0 lead at 3:17. The goal, a one-timer through the five-hole, was Tatchell's first of his career.

With junior forward Brett Cameron receiving a 10-minute game misconduct and a 5-minute major for conduct to the head, the Seawolves broke free from the Warrior power-play unit and created a 3-on-1 heading into the Merrimack zone. Junior center Matt Bailey sent a cross-pass to Gellert, who fired a wrister by netminder Rasmus Tirronen at 12:19.

Not long after the five-minute major had expired, senior forward Tyler Currier was whistled for hooking at 15:31. Once again shorthanded, the Seawolves were able to enter the Warrior zone and make it a 3-0 lead with Allen's second tally of the season at 17:06.

With just 2:44 left in the second frame, the Seawolves extended their lead to four with Allen's second tally of the night. Following a faceoff win by Bailey, senior defenseman Scott Warner picked up the puck and found Allen stationed outside the crease.

The shutout ended with 2:20 expired on the clock in the third with a man-advantage strike by John Heffernen. UAA didn't hang their heads though, as Tatchell capitalized on a Warrior turnover and patiently skated around Tirronen for his second of the evening.

At 11:29 rookie Hayden Trupp was pulled down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot that wasn't able to find mesh.

Junior defenseman Quinn Sproule added UAA's sixth of the night – sandwiched between Merrimack goals at 11:58 and 16:09 – at 15:32. Sproule fired from the blueline for his first of the season and the Seawolves' first power-play tally on the short season.

Junior goaltender Rob Gunderson, who dressed in the third period against No. 2-ranked North Dakota on Friday night, got the starting nod tonight, making 27 saves in the crease. Tirronen faced 24 UAA shots, stopping 18.

Host Alaska Fairbanks defeated UND in the championship game, 2-1, to claim their third overall title. 

The Seawolves will face UND for their Western Collegiate Hockey Association road opener in Grand Forks, N.D., on Oct. 26-27. The games are scheduled to commence at 4:37 p.m. ADT on Friday and 4:07 p.m. ADT on Saturday.
