MANKATO, Minn. A career-high 37 saves by junior netminder
Chris Kamal kept the game close but it wasn't enough as the Alaska Anchorage
Seawolves dropped a 3-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association game to the Minnesota
State Mavericks at the Verizon Wireless Center on Friday evening.
The Seawolves opened the scoring in the first frame before
allowing the Mavericks two goals in the first and one in the second for two
points in the league standings. UAA remains 12th in the WCHA with five points –
just one shy of 11th-place Bemidji State.
For the third straight game the Seawolves struck first and
early with junior forward Matt Bailey's second tally of the season at 1:49.
Sophomore Kory Roy flew down the right side of the boards and tossed a
centering pass on net where Bailey backhanded it top shelf for the 1-0 lead.
Just 12 seconds after his goal, Bailey was tagged for
tripping, setting up MSU's power-play until that capitalized at 2:59 to deadlock
the game, 1-1. The Mavericks would then take their first lead of the night at
15:24 with a rebound goal by Johnny McInnis.
Minnesota State extended its lead to two with Brett Knowles
first collegiate tally at 4:42 of the second. Kamal made the initial save
before Knowles knocked in the rebound for the final tally of the night.
Kamal, making his second straight start in night, improved
his save percentage to .912, but dropped his season record to 2-4-0 with the
loss. A local of Fairbanks, Stephon Williams (20 saves) improved to 5-3-1. The
Seawolves permitted MSU to pepper Kamal with a season-high 40 on net to UAA's
21 on Williams.
The Seawolves were scoreless on three man advantage
opportunities, while the Mavericks furnished one on four attempts.
The Seawolves wrap up their final road series of 2012
