Skiers wrap up hosting duties in fifth

GIRDWOOD – Host Alaska Anchorage wrapped up its final day of action with the men's and women's slalom at the Alyeska Ski Resort, finishing fifth among Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association in the Seawolf Invitational on Saturday.

At the completion of seven events – the men's giant slalom was cancelled due to unfavorable snow conditions – the Seawolves combined for 693 points. No. 1-ranked Utah won the event with 858 points, while Denver (806) was runner-up and NCAA defending champion Colorado (775) was third. New Mexico claimed fourth with 769 points, while UAA held off fifth-place Montana State (690) by three points.

Leading the Seawolves was freshman Niko Harmanen, a local of Saarenkyla, Finland, in 10th. A redshirt in 2011, Harmanen completed the two runs in a time of one minute, 26.81. Helping UAA to 68 points in the men's slalom were junior Andreas Adde (25th, 1:50.78) and sophomore Christopher Kollenborg (27th, 1:59.35).

In the women's slalom, the Seawolves got a combined 66 points from junior Kayla Hoog-Fry, senior Alex Parker and freshman Anna Berecz. Hoog-Fry was clocked at 1:28.49 for 21st, while Parker (1:28.70) was 23rd and Berecz (1:29.53) was 25th.
Winning the men's and women's downhill races were Denver's Trevor Philp at 1:24.49 and Sterling Grant at 1:24.36.

Today's race concludes the Seawolves hosting duties after seven days of action in Alaska. UAA will head to Montana for the final third of the season on Feb. 22-25, before qualified individual compete at the 2012 NCAA Skiing Championships on March 7-10.
