Jensen, Doucette pace Seawolves at DU

DENVER – Freshmen Sariaye Jensen and Morgan Cook delivered solid all-around performances Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team in a tri-meet at Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (3-5) posted their second-highest team score of the season with 188.050 points, finishing third behind host and 15th-ranked Denver (195.650) and Iowa State (194.375).

Jensen, from Henderson, Nev., scored a 9.5 on floor exercise and  matched her own UAA season-best score on uneven bars with a 9.75, racking up 37.075 all-around points. Cook, from Hot Springs, Ark., earned a 36.875 all-around thanks to a 9.45 on floor.

The Seawolves also got a big night from Melissa Doucette – who posted a 9.725 on vault and a career-best 9.625 on beam – and fellow sophomore Emily Petersen. Petersen delivered a 9.675 on bars and a 9.65 on beam in her season debut.

“Melissa great job on three events,” said UAA head coach Paul Stoklos. “She is still recovering from a shoulder injury she had last week, so we kept her off bars, but we obviously hope to get her back to full strength soon. Emily was terrific as well. It's nice to have her back in the lineup.”

The Seawolves return home for next week to host a dual meet against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival Air Force on Sunday, Feb. 12. The competition begins at 2 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
