Bronga, Urbain pace 'Wolves in skiing

GIRDWOOD – Paced by top-three finishes by senior Jaime Bronga and freshman Anais Urbain, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves are third following three events at their own Seawolf Invitational against Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association members on Thursday.

The Seawolves, with 297 points, trail Utah (356) and NCAA defending champion, Colorado (313), which are No. 1 and No. 2 in the team standings. Montana State is currently fourth at 282, while New Mexico wraps up the top five with 265 points.

Leading the Seawolf pack at the Kincaid Park cross country trails was Bronga, a three-time All-American. A local of Anchorage, Bronga completed the 5K freestyle race in a time of 14 minutes, 18.8 seconds for third place. Also scoring for the UAA women were seniors Laura Rombach (14:58.1) and Steffi Hiemer (15:07.1) in 12th and 14th, respectively.

In the men's 10K freestyle, sophomore Lukas Ebner was first to cross the finish line for the Seawolves, clocking in at 25:29.3. Picking up points for UAA was sophomore Lasse Molegaard-Nielsen (25:48.9) in 11th place and freshman Nevio Zeni (26:54.4) in 20th.

Producing another stellar performance on the slopes was Urbain, a native of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France. Urbain collected her second straight top-five finish with a career-high runner-up placing at one minute, 3.44 seconds. Senior All-American Alex Parker (1:04.58) and freshman Vanessa Berther (1:05.05) each helped the UAA women to 115 points in the GS, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.

The Alpine portion of the Seawolf Invite was cut short at the Alyeska Ski Resort due to unfavorable snow conditions. After completing the women's first run of the giant slalom, the race officials delayed the start of the men's giant slalom to work on the course and were able to get 23 men down the slope before cancelling the race, which had become unsafe.

Action continues tomorrow with the final day of the UAA Invite in Girdwood with the slalom races. The Seawolf Invite will also continue tomorrow with the men's and women's classical races at Kincaid Park.
