UAA embarks on busy week in California

THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's track & field teams head to Southern California for the Northridge Spring Break Multi (March 15-16), Occidental Distance Carnival (March 16) and the Northridge Invitational (March 17).

GNAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: UAA swept the GNAC Athlete of the Week honors as senior Hallidie Wilt and rookie Cody Parker picked up the first Seawolf accolade of the young season on March 12 ... Wilt, from Unalaska, started off her last season with a career-best time of 10 minutes, 42.9 seconds in the women's steeplechase, breaking her own UAA record of 10:48.90 set on April 15, 2010 ... the time, which qualifies her provisionally for the NCAAs, also ranks third on the all-time GNAC chart ... a native of Comox, B.C., Parker commenced his collegiate career by breaking the Seawolf record in the javelin with a NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 211 feet, one inch ... expected to be a national contender, Parker easily broke the previous record of 175-7, set by Casey Robinson on April 2, 2010 ... currently, both Wilt and Parker lead the country in their respective events ... Wilt leads Chico State's Amy Schnittger (10:50.87), while Parker tops UC San Diego's Nick Howe (201-8.).

BEN BROWN INVITE RECAP:
UAA opened the 2012 slate with eight NCAA Div. II provisional qualifying times and three schools records at the Ben Brown Track & Field Invitational on March 10 ... combined, the Seawolves posted 11 top-five finishes on the Titan Track Complex ... UAA was led by junior Micah Chelimo in the men's 5,000 meters, who won with a personal-best time of 14 minutes, 8.91 seconds ... UAA received a 2-3-4 finish in the women's 5,000 meters, qualifying each individual provisionally – junior Ruth Keino led the pack with a runner-up performance at 16:56.83, while rookie Susan Tanui made her track & field debut at 17:05.10, edging sophomore Ivy O'Guinn (17:05.56) ... qualifying provisionally in the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles were senior Shaun Ward and sophomore Haleigh Lloyd ...Ward was clocked at 53.27 for fifth, while Lloyd was second at 1:01.51 ... winning the men's javelin and setting a new school record was freshman Cody Parker ... Parker set the UAA record with a toss of 211 feet, 1 inch, while qualifying provisionally for the NCAAs ... also setting UAA records were seniors Hallidie Wilt and Micah Johnson in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and men's pole vault, respectively ... Wilt beat her previous UAA record of 10:48.90, set on April 15, 2010, with a winning time of 10:42.9 – a NCAA provisional time ... Johnson leapt to 13 feet, 6.5 inches in the men's pole vault.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW: The Seawolves return 22 letterwinners (12 men, 10 women) from last season, including eight of the nine that qualified for the 2011 NCAA Track & Field Championships in May ... UAA will add 20 newcomers (12 men, 8 women) to the roster ... the Seawolves will get back All-Americans Susan Bick, Micah Chelimo, Alfred Kangogo, Ruth Keino and Shaun Ward ... highlighting the 2012 freshman class is Cody Parker, a javelin thrower who is expected to make an immidiate inpact and compete at the National level ... the 2012 slate will feature five weekends in California and one in Oregon ... the GNAC Championships will be held in Nampa, Idaho, and in Monmouth, Ore., in May, while the NCAA Div. II Track & Field Championships will take place on May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo.

2011 SEASON REVIEW: UAA wrapped up the 2011 season with five All-Americans at the NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships ... the Seawolf men finished tied for 19th in the team standings, marking four straight seasons in the top 20 at Nationals ... leading the pack at the NCAAs was the West Region Male Track Athlete of the Year, Alfred Kangogo, who collected a podium finish with a 3rd-place showing in the 1,500 meters ... at the GNAC Championships, senior David Registe was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer after posting a meet record with 30 individual points and becoming the first athlete to win five titles (including two relays) in a single conference meet ... meanwhile, three other individuals came away with GNAC titles, while both the men's 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams brought home the gold ... throughout the season, the Seawolves combined for 19 school records (9 women, 10 men), while placing 13 athletes on the inaugural USTFCCCA Track & Field Div. II All-Region Team and 11 on the GNAC's All-Academic Team.
