'Wolves compete at Willamette meet

THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's track & field teams will compete at the annual Willamette Invitational on March 30-31 in Salem, Ore. The events are scheduled to commence at 2 p.m. ADT both days at Charles Bowles Track.

GNAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Junior Micah Chelimo earned his third career GNAC Athlete of the Week honor for track & field after producing a NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on March 16 ... Chelimo, from Kapkoi, Kenya, won the men's steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes, 56.37 seconds at the Occidental Distance Carnival (Eagle Rock, Calif.), just .37 seconds away from the automatic qualifying time ... Chelimo joins senior Hallidie Wilt and rookie Cody Parker, who each picked up weekly accolades on March 12.

NORTHRIDGE/OCCIDENTAL RECAP: The Seawolves completed their trek in California over the weekend of March 15-17 with three school records (1 men, 2 women) and five provisional marks (2 men, 3 women) ... setting UAA records were seniors Micah Johnson (13-7.25) and Kelsea Johnson (4,838) in the men's pole vault and the women's heptathlon, respectively, while freshman Susan Tanui broke the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase record at 10:37.65 ... qualifying provisionally for the NCAAs were senior Shaun Ward (52.74) and sophomore Haleigh Lloyd (61.51) in the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles, while junior Micah Chelimo (8:56.37) and Tanui qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase ... Johnson also qualified provisionally in the heptathlon.
