Spikers sweep WOU, stay perfect in GNAC

ANCHORAGE – Sophomores Katelynn Zanders and Julia Mackey smashed 11 kills apiece Thursday to help keep the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team unbeaten in league play with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 sweep of Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (11-6, 5-0 GNAC) also got 15 digs from junior libero Quinn Barker as they improved on their program-best Great Northwest Athletic Conference start and snapped a four-match losing streak against WOU.

The Wolves (5-9, 2-2) were led by nine kills on .368 hitting from middle blocker Becky Blees, but the rest of her teammates were held to a .060 attack percentage and out-dug 65-54 by the Seawolves.

UAA controlled the first set behind the play of Zanders, who had five kills and five of her 15 digs in the opening frame. Along with her 11 kills, it was the fifth double-double of the year for the South Anchorage High School product.

After jumping ahead 5-0 in the second, the Seawolves allowed the visitors from Monmouth, Ore., to stay close and eventually take the lead, 19-18.  Mackey answered with a kill to tie it, however, and sophomore Sarah Johnson ripped her only two kills of the night on the next two points, sparking another 5-0 Seawolf run. The Wolves cut it to 24-23 before right-side hitter Maureen Sabado ripped a kill off the WOU block on set point.

The teams split the first 12 points of the third set before UAA scored the next five – getting two kills and a block assist from Sabado in the deciding surge – and the Wolves never got closer than 16-14 the rest of the way.

Sabado finished with seven kills on .400 hitting and three block assists, while senior middle blocker Jodi Huddleston had a match-high six total blocks, including a solo. Junior outside hitter Brooke Pottle added five kills and nine digs.

The Seawolves hit .231 on the night thanks to senior setter Siobhan Johansen (22 assists) and freshman setter Morgan Hooe (13 assists, 7 digs, 2 aces).

Off to their best start the 13-year history of the GNAC, the Seawolves next host Saint Martin's (5-11, 1-3) at the WFSC on Saturday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: UAA won for just the third time in the last nine home matches against WOU, tying the all-time series in Anchorage, 7-7 … WOU still leads 15-12 overall … Mackey has now posted five straight double-digit kills performances, while Zanders has two double-doubles in the last three matches … Zanders also had a pair of aces to increase her team-high total to 21 … head coach Chris Green was honored before the match for achieving his 100th victory as UAA's head coach … Green is now 101-56 in five and a half years at the Seawolf helm … UAA also honored its men's and women's cross country teams between the second and third sets, presenting the reigning GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region champions with their championship rings.
