Allen's hat trick forges 4-4 tie with Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A hat trick from junior Scott Allen helped the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves come back from a 3-1 deficit to forge a 4-4 overtime Western Collegiate Hockey Association tie with the Bemidji State Beavers, Saturday night at the Sanford Center.

The Seawolves (5-4-1, 2-3-1 WCHA) got on the board with Allen's first goal before the Beavers (4-6-2, 4-3-1 WCHA) posted three unanswered goals. Allen would then add his second and third goals of the night to tie the contest 3-3 before senior Matt Bailey gave UAA the lead once more. BSU then retaliated less than three minutes later with the game-tying goal.

Similar to Friday night, the Seawolves were first to strike, taking a 1-0 lead at 12:40 of the first, before allowing the Beavers to respond with their own at 15:01. Allen bagged his first of the night with a backhander after a give-and-go with junior Andrew Pettitt – Pettitt's first point of the season.

BSU would then knot the game with James Hansen's shot from the point that squeezed through traffic.

After the first intermission, the Beavers took a 2-1 lead at 2:39 with a tally by Phillip Marinaccio. Following a goal review by the officials, it was determined that it wasn't kicked into the net by Marinaccio and thus a goal. The Beavers then extended the lead to two goals with an even-strength tally by Mitch Cain at 7:22.

Over ten minutes later, Allen beat goaltender Adam Walsh, five-hole on the power play to cut the deficit to one goal with 2:10 left in the second period. The last time Allen scored two goals in a game was against the Beavers, almost a year ago on Nov. 24.

Allen then scored at 3:52 of the third for his first collegiate hat trick and seventh overall goal this season to tie the game at three before senior Matt Bailey collected an unassisted strike at 4:33 to return the lead to the Green & Gold. The lead was short lived as BSU found the equalizer at 7:18 with Marinaccio's second of the night to send the game into extra minutes.

UAA controlled the pace of overtime, but wasn't able to convert, keeping the Seawolves winless in WCHA road games. The Seawolves found the net twice in extra minutes.

The Seawolves registered a commanding lead on shots on goal in the first,16-7 and a 10-6 lead in the second, before the Beavers out shot UAA, 17-6 in the third. Dressing between the pipes, freshman Michael Matyas made 27 saves, while Walsh had 30 saves.

The game also featured another lengthy goal review in which a would-be-goal by senior Jordan Kwas – who assisted on Allen's second and third tallies – was overturned at the end of the first.

The Seawolves return to the Sullivan Arena, where they are undefeated at 4-0-0, Nov. 22-23 when they host the Michigan Tech Huskies.

Seawolf Notes

Allen's hat trick was UAA's second on the season, as Kwas furnished one on Oct. 12 vs. Air Force …Allen and Bailey are tied for team lead with 7 goals each ... the Seawolves tripled their goal production for WCHA road games, as they had only mustered two goals prior to tonight … UAA has played in one other overtime game this season, defeating Denver, 3-2 in Fairbanks on Oct. 19 … the Seawolves are now 3-1-1 when scoring first.
