Women outrace Mustangs in opener, 85-56

ANCHORAGE – Junior wing Alli Madison scored a game-high 17 points and KeKe Wright pulled down 15 rebounds in her Alaska Anchorage debut Saturday as the Seawolves rolled to an season-opening 85-56 women's basketball victory over Western New Mexico at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA also got 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocked from junior-college transfer Emily Craft, plus 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals from freshman point guard Kiki Robertson in the first NCAA Div. II game for both players.

WNMU (0-2) was led by 11 points and five rebounds from guard RaTanya Newsome, who did all of her scoring in the first half to keep the Mustangs close.

The Seawolves led just 28-26 with 6 minutes left in the first half when they made their move, getting a three-point play from sophomore guard Alyssa Hutchins to spark a 9-2 run. Alli Madison drained a three-pointer – UAA's first of the game after 10 misses – and Craft scored on a put-back with 10 seconds left to give the hosts a 48-35 edge.

Madison scored the first two baskets of the second half and the visitors from Silver City would never get closer than 14 the rest of the way. UAA led by as many as 32 in the second stanza, with Hutchins collecting 13 of her career-high 16 points after the break. The Wasilla product shot 6 of 9 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from long range, while tying her career-high with three steals.

Senior forward Kylie Burns finished with seven points and seven rebounds despite foul trouble, and sophomore guard Jessica Madison chipped in eight points and four assists.

Meanwhile, Wright – a JC All-American from Gillette (Wyo.) College – snagged 13 of her 15 boards on the defensive end to spearhead a 53-47 rebounding advantage for UAA, while Craft – a 6-1 center from Central Wyoming College – made her first four shots from the field and tossed in 6 of 8 from the free-throw stripe.

UAA plays its next three games on the island of Oahu, starting with a Nov. 16 contest at BYU-Hawaii.
