Seawolves sign Idaho prep star Leah Bonner

ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage women's basketball coach Ryan McCarthy has made a major addition to the future of his program, announcing Wednesday that Idaho prep star Leah Bonner has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Seawolves.

A 6-foot forward, Bonner was the 2011-12 4A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore after helping Skyview High School back to the State tournament for the first time in four seasons. The Nampa, Idaho, native averaged 18.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game as the Hawks finished runner-up at the 4A District III tournament and fourth place at State. She shot 49 percent from the field and averaged 1.5 blocks and 3.9 steals per game as well.

Bonner missed her junior year due to injury but is set to suit up again this winter for her senior campaign.

“We are thrilled to have Leah as the newest member of our Seawolf family,” said McCarthy, who is currently 22-11 in his second season at UAA. “She is a gifted scorer who has the ability to take over a game. While Leah had many options to choose from, I think our style of play and the vision for our program fit in line with what she was looking to accomplish in her career.  I think Seawolf fans can expect big things from Leah Bonner over the next four years."

The Seawolves, who lose just one senior (forward Kylie Burns) from this year's team, are back at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex this week to host major Great Northwest Athletic Conference showdowns against Montana State Billings (Thurs., Dec. 5, 7 p.m.) and 6th-ranked Seattle Pacific (Sat., Dec. 7, 5:15 p.m.).
