Tanui sets UAA 10K record at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. – Highlighted by a broken Alaska Anchorage school record in the 10,000 meters by junior Susan Tanui, the Seawolves concluded Day 1 of the 55th annual Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday.

Tanui, from Eldoret, Kenya, furnished a automatic NCAA qualification time of 34 minutes, 19.08 seconds, good for sixth-place in the highly competitive Elite heat. Tanui bested the previous record of 34:30.53 that was held by current teammate Ruth Keino. Tanui has already booked a ticket to the NCAAs in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and owns a provisional time in the 1500 meters.

UAA had four athletes competing in the 1500 meters; juniors Ivy O'Guinn (4:27.77) and Susan Bick (4:39.26) and freshman Jessica Pahkala (4:40.95) on the women's side and sophomore Isaac Kangogo (3:53.07) in the men's race.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Katie Krehlik furnished a time of 11:36.74, while sophomore Bryn Haebe crossed at 11:40.97.

The Green & Gold will return to action with the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Friday before heading to Norwalk, Calif., on Saturday for the Beach Invitational.
