HUNTSVILLE – Matt Bailey and Jordan Kwas each scored a pair of goals and Chris Kamal stopped 18 shots to lead Alaska Anchorage to a 4-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Alabama Huntsville here at the Von Braun Center Saturday night.
The victory gave the Seawolves (13-9-2, 8-7-3 WCHA) a three-point weekend as they leap-frogged Bemidji State into fourth place in the WCHA. UAH slipped to a 1-24-1 overall and 1-14-1 in league play.
Bailey's goals came just 17 seconds apart in the first period. He put UAA up 1-0 at 11:06 of the first on assists from Chase Van Allen and Brett Cameron. Following the ensuing faceoff, Bailey lit the lamp again – his team-leading 13th goal on the season – at 11:23 to put the Seawolves up 2-0 off a feed from Hayden Trupp.
UAA extended its lead to 3-0 early in the second period as Kwas scored at the 17:24 mark off an assist from Austin Coldwell.
The Chargers' Matt Salhany ruined Kamal's shutout bid as he scored with 6:42 remaining in the third.
Kwas' second goal at 17:48 of the third came via a nifty delayed move off a 2-on-1 rush into the UAH zone. Coldwell was credited the assist – his second on the night.
Kamal, who drew his seventh straight start, improved to 5-2-1 on the season with a .926 saves percentage.
The Seawolves outshot the Chargers by a commanding 44-19 margin. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.
UAA, unbeaten in its last five WCHA contests, will return home next weekend to host Northern Michigan in a WCHA series at the Sullivan Arena. Opening faceoff on both Jan. 24 & 25 is set for 7 p.m.
