BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Seawolves' Western Collegiate Hockey Association road woes continued Thursday as the league's defending champion Ferris State dispatched Alaska Anchorage, 10-2 at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Following a respectable opening stanza for the Seawolves, the Bulldogs erupted for six goals in the second period for an 8-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. The Bulldogs, who had 11 goals in the previous nine games, found the offense they were looking for as UAA allowed 10 goals for the first time since Jan. 17, 2003 vs. North Dakota (11).
The Seawolves' first-period strike was by junior forward Blake Tatchell with helpers going to Chase Van Allen and Scott Allen at 12:08, while sophomore forward Zack Rassell collected his first of the season in the third period with assists to Austin Azurdia and Hayden Trupp at 13:07.
Meanwhile, Chad McDonald led FSU with two goals and two assists, while Gerald Mayhew contributed with two goals and an assist and Matt Robertson had one goal and two helpers. Overall, eight different Bulldogs scored over the course of the game.
The Bulldogs, who now have a five-game winning streak against UAA, outshot the Seawolves, 40-19. That's the fourth time of the season that the Seawolves have allowed 40+ shots on goal, while posting a season-low-tying 19 shots on target.
In the league standings, the Bulldogs move into a two-way tie with Bemidji State with four points, while UAA sits at No. 7 with Lake Superior State with two points each.
The teams will rematch tomorrow at 3:07 p.m. AST as the Seawolves look to redeem themselves with their first win ever in Big Rapids.
