BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Four-late period goals by Ferris State gave the Bulldogs the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep with a 4-0 shutout against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves Friday night at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Despite another solid game by freshman netminder Olivier Mantha, the Bulldogs (6-5-0, 3-3-0 WCHA) handed the Seawolves (4-6-2, 1-5-0 WCHA) their fifth straight loss as they wrapped up their four-game road trip in Michigan.
The Bulldogs' Matt Robertson furnished the first strike of the night, collecting a backdoor pass from Gerald Mayhew with just 1:09 left in the opening frame. There was nothing Mantha could do, after stopping the previous 16 shots he faced.
The second late-period goal came curtesy of Mayhew with 38.6 seconds left in the second period, with the Seawolves attempting to kill a 5-on-3 Bulldog advantage. Jason Binkley and Austin Kosack assisted on Mayhew's third goal of the weekend.
FSU's Andrew Mayer netted his first collegiate tally with 2:39 left in the third, before the Bulldogs' Justin Buzzeo finished the night with a shorthanded, empty net goal at 18:35.
The Seawolves allowed 39 shots on goal, while mustering just a season-low 17 shots on goal. Mantha (3-4-1) made 36 saves in the loss, while C.J. Motte turned aside all 17 shots he faced. UAA spent 14 minutes in the box to FSU's 10.
The Seawolves conclude their 11-game road trip and return to the Sullivan Arena, Nov. 21-22 when they host Northern Michigan for a pair of WCHA contests. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. both nights.
