HOUGHTON, Mich. – Another solid night for rookie goaltender Olivier Mantha wasn't enough as the No. 9-ranked Michigan Tech Huskies shutout the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 2-0 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Friday evening.
The Seawolves (4-3-2, 1-2-0 WCHA) were given a chance to win by receiving 44 saves from Mantha, but turnovers and a struggling offense allowed the Huskies (7-0-0, 5-0-0 WCHA) to remain undefeated on the season, while handing UAA its first shutout of the season.
The game started out one-sided and remained that way for the full 60 minutes of play as Mantha, from La Tuque, Quebec, turned aside 18 shots in the first as both teams were unable to get on the scoring sheet. Meanwhile, the Huskies had many Grade A scoring chances, including a breakaway that hit the pipe and a shot that chimed the crossbar.
The Huskies finally broke by Mantha with a power-play goal, with just four seconds left on the man advantage. MTU's Tyler Heinonen tapped in the rebound, five-hole for the 1-0 lead at 6:31 of the second period.
At the halfway mark of the game, Tech was leading UAA, 30-7 for shots on goal and went on to out shoot UAA, 15-7 in the second period.
The third period was UAA's best of the night, but an even-strength goal by Malcolm Gould – who assisted on Tech's first tally – at 11:18 gave Tech the 2-0 advantage. The Seawolves pulled Mantha in the final 3:21 of the game, but couldn't break the Huskies' defense.
The game ended with a 46-19 shots on goal lead for Tech. Mantha (3-2-1) made 40+ saves for the second time of the season with 44, while MTU netminder Jamie Phillips (6-0-0) was essentially unchallenged with 19 saves.
UAA was 0-for-3 on the power play, while MTU went 1-for-4.
The teams rematch tomorrow night at 3:07 p.m. AST.
