Seawolves tame Wildcats with big 2nd half

ANCHORAGE – Freshman center Kalidou Diouf dominated inside with 22 points Wednesday to lead the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 80-58 victory over Portland Bible at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (5-7) also got 16 points and six assists from Travis Thompson and a career-high 12 points from fellow senior guard Boomer Blossom as they closed the non-conference portion of their schedule with a second straight win over the Wildcats (4-11).

Portland Bible was led by 14 points from forward Mozeek Waggener and 13 points from guard Marcellus Gray.

Following a 91-52 win over the same team Tuesday, UAA struggled to pull away in the first half of the rematch and took a 33-32 edge into the break. Leading 40-39 early in the second half, junior point guard Brian McGill scored back-to-back baskets and fed junior guard Kevin Bowman for a three-pointer to highlight a 9-0 run, and Thompson's steal and layup at the 11-minute mark gave UAA a double-digit lead for good.

Blossom, a former Soldotna High School standout, scored seven straight points midway through the half to stretch the lead to a more comfortable 65-46, shooting 5 of 6 from the floor, including 2 of 2 from long range.

Bowman added 11 points and six assists, and McGill had 10 points and seven assists.

UAA is off for the holidays until resuming Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a New Year's Day (7:30 p.m.) game against Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.

NOTES: Thompson pushed his career scoring total to 1,368 to move past Seawolf Hall of Famer Jason Kaiser (1,363 points, 1993-95) for No. 6 on UAA's all-time list … Thompson's three three-pointers Wednesday leave him just three shy of tying former teammate Kyle Fossman (257 treys, 2010-14) for that UAA career record … McGill moved up to No. 11 on UAA's career assist list at 259, needing just one more to move into the top 10 … Bowman has totaled at least nine points and five assists in the past three games … Diouf shot 11 of 15 from the field to record his second 20-plus scoring effort; the redshirt freshman from Germany has scored double figures in eight straight games.
