FAIRBANKS – Goals by senior Matt Bailey and freshman Brad Duwe and outstanding goaltending by senior Rob Gunderson kept Alaska Anchorage's season alive with a 2-1 win over Alaska Fairbanks to force a Game 3 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association First Round series at the Carlson Center on Friday evening.
The Seawolves (17-15-4) picked up their first win on Friday night since Jan. 10 when they received back-to-back goals in the second period to dispatch the Nanooks (18-14-4) and keep the in-state rivalry tied, 3-3 this season. The winner of tomorrow's game will advance to the WCHA Final Five on March 21-22 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
With just 28.1 seconds left in the first period, the Nanooks went up 1-0 with a slap shot just inside the blueline by Colton Parako – the WCHA's Defensive Player of the Year. First assist went to Colton Beck, giving him 100 career points.
Following the 15-minute intermission the Seawolves came out with back-to-back goals to take the lead, 2-1. Bailey,a WCHA First Team honoree, knotted the game at one apiece with a wrister from the left faceoff circle at 2:59 of the second period - his team high 19th of the season. Just 1:28 later, Duwe picked up his second of the series when he capitalized on Blake Tatchell's shot from the point at 4:27.
The Seawolves entered the third with the 2-1 lead and hung on throughout the 20 minutes of play for the win – just the fourth time UAA will play in a Game 3 of the First Round since joining the league. The last time UAA played in a best-of-three series was March 9-11, 2007 against Minnesota.
Picking up a combined 25 saves in net, Gunderson's 11 saves in the third period gave the No.6-seeded Seawolves the edge they needed to defeat the No. 3 seed UAF. Gunderson improved his season record to 9-7-2.
Both teams were scoreless on the man advantage for the second straight night.
UAA's 17 wins is the most since joining the league and the most since 1992-93 when the Seawolves were a WCHA affiliate. Following review of game film, UAA's second goal on Thursday night was credited to Duwe.
