UAA aces test against Seattle Pacific, 3-0

ANCHORAGE – Junior Katelynn Zanders delivered 11 kills and sophomore Erin Braun recorded perfect hitting Monday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team swept Seattle Pacific 25-18, 25-16, 25-20 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (10-2, 4-0 GNAC) also got 10 kills and seven digs from junior right-side hitter Julia Mackey as they became the first team to four victories in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Braun – coming off a career-high .600 attack percentage in Saturday's win over MSU Billings – connected for kills on all eight of her attacks against SPU, while fellow middle blocker Kayla McGlathery added six kills.

The Falcons (9-3, 3-1) had won three straight and eight of their last nine matches but could never get rolling Monday. Senior outside hitter Madi Cavell, the reigning GNAC Offensive Player of the Week, led her team with nine kills and 13 digs.

UAA led throughout the opening set until a 5-0 SPU run gave the visitors a brief 18-17 lead. But McGlathery and setter Morgan Hooe teamed for a block and the Seawolves ended the set with an 8-0 run behind the serve of senior Brooke Pottle. Zanders had four kills in the clinching spurt.

After trailing briefly, 3-1, early in the second, the Seawolves took control and ran away for a two-set lead. Mackey delivered five of her kills as UAA hit an impressive .556 in the frame.

In the third, the Falcons nearly erased a 19-12 deficit and pulled within 20-19 on back-to-back Seawolf attack errors. Head coach Chris Green called for a key substitution at that point, though, as Pottle checked back into the contest and promptly smashed a kill. Following an ace by Mackey, Pottle converted two more kills on feeds from libero Quinn Barker, and the match would end on an SPU service error.

The Seawolves out-hit the Falcons .234 to .150 and took advantage of a huge 11-2 edge in service aces.  Zanders equaled her career-high with five aces, including three in a row midway through the second set.

Hooe dished a match-high 35 assists and Barker came up with 15 digs and season-best five assists.

Up next, the Seawolves hit the road for perhaps their toughest trip of the season when they face nationally ranked squads from Northwest Nazarene (Thur., 5 p.m. ADT) and Central Washington (Sat., 6 p.m. ADT).
