Seawolves fall to Falcons at Royal Brougham

SEATTLE – Forward Mitch Penner scored a game-high 21 points Thursday to power hot-shooting Seattle Pacific to a 73-51 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over  Alaska Anchorage, snapping the Seawolves' five-game win streak.

The Seawolves (8-8, 4-2 GNAC) were led by 17 points from senior guard Travis Thompson and 10 points from junior point guard Brian McGill but could never make up an early deficit, falling for the 11th straight year at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons (13-4, 5-2) also got big nights from point guard Riley Stockton with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and center Cory Hutsen with 18 points. Together, SPU's top scorers combined to shoot 22 of 32, pacing their team to 62 percent accuracy.

UAA led only briefly, 5-4, when Kevin Bowman swished a three-pointer at the 16:38 mark. Hutsen and Penner gave SPU the advantage with consecutive baskets, and the Falcons gradually extended their lead throughout the half, entering the break ahead 35-23.

Thompson scored UAA's first eight points of the second half and brought his team within 41-31 on a pair of technical free throws with 16:37 remaining. The Seawolves stayed within striking distance until the final five minutes, when Stockton and Brendan Carroll accounted for a 6-0 spurt that brought the lead to 65-47.

The Seawolves were outrebounded 30-19 and collected just three assists as they posted a season-low offensive total. Junior guard Dom Hunter scored six points off the bench and freshman big men Kalidou Diouf and Sjurg Berg tallied identical lines of four points, four rebounds and one block. Thompson shot 6 of 12 from the field and made all four of his free throws.

The Seawolves will complete their three-game road swing Saturday at Montana State Billings. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. AST at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
