NAMPA, Idaho. – The Alaska Anchorage men's and women's indoor track & field teams made a splash at the season opener Friday with junior All-American Karolin Anders winning the pentathlon at the Ed Jacoby Invite & Multis.
A two-time All-American in the pentathlon, Anders furnished a combined 3,791 points to dispatch Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johnson (3,573) by 218 points. The Berlin, Germany, native used a personal-best winning long jump of 18 feet, 5.25 inches, while finishing first in the high jump (5-7.75) and shot put (35-10.5).
The GNAC's track & field indoor athlete of the year from a year ago, Anders also finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.28 and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.31. Meanwhile, teammate Rosie Smith (Bartlett HS) took sixth with 3,213 points in her first pentathlon.
In addition to Anders individual win, junior Cody Thomas sits first in the heptathlon after four events scored. The Kiwi has amassed 3,004 points to lead WSU's Dino Dodig (2,903) going into Day 2 of the event tomorrow. Thomas won the 60 meters (7.10), long jump (22-4.25) and the high jump (6-5.5), while taking second in the shot put (39-8.5). His long jump was a personal best.
Also competing today was the men's distance medley relay, which finished runner-up with a time of 10:13.01.
