MARQUETTE, Mich. – Third period heroics by senior Scott Allen and freshman Austin Azurdia weren't enough as the Northern Michigan Wildcats picked up the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves with a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday.
Much like Friday night, the Seawolves (7-13-4, 4-12-2 WCHA) and Wildcats (11-9-6, 8-8-4 WCHA) had a back-and-forth game that saw UAA down, 2-1 late in regulation. With the extra attacker, Allen struck with 18.8 seconds left, sending the game into extra minutes. Unfortunately, the Wildcats continued to control the flow of the game and netted the game-winning strike with 11 seconds left of overtime.
Allen's team-high eighth goal of the season was tipped from senior Austin Coldwell's shot from the point, while the goal was made possible by Azurdia, who made a head-first dive in the final minutes of the third period to stop an empty-net opportunity for the Wildcats. Azurdia also had a goal and an assist on Friday.
The night started with a pair of goals late in the first period as NMU took a 1-0 lead at 17:40, before senior Brett Cameron responded with a power-play tally at 19:24. Allen and junior Blake Tatchell picked up the helpers. The 1-1 score held until the Wildcat's Mitch Jones netted the go-ahead goal with just 1:56 expired on the clock in the third period.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats' control of the contest was evident in shots on goal. For the second time of the season, NMU kept UAA to a season-low-tying 13 shots on target and placed 37 on net themselves. Freshman Olivier Mantha (6-9-3) made 34 saves in the loss, while Michael Doan picked up his first win of the season with 11 saves.
The loss kept the Seawolves last in the 10-team league with 10 points as they stay on the road and head to No. 3–ranked Minnesota State for a conference tilt, Feb. 6-7.
