HOUGHTON, Mich. – A two-goal night from rookie Sean MacTavish lifted the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves over the No. 17-ranked Michigan Tech Huskies, 3-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Sophomore Tad Kozun picked up his team-leading eighth goal on the season with the game-winning strike at 18:39 of the third, giving the Seawolves (7-6-2, 4-3-1 WCHA) their first road win since Oct. 24. Meanwhile, MacTavish redirected two shots for his first collegiate goals, as UAA ended MTU's (9-5-1, 8-5-0 WCHA) four-game unbeaten streak.
The Seawolves got on the board first – UAA is 7-0-1 when scoring first – when MacTavish redirected Chris William's shot at 5:41 of the first. One game after registering his first collegiate goal, William's picked up his first assist of the season for a two-game point streak.
The momentum swung in favor of the Huskies in period No. 2 as Alex Petan and Tyler Heinonen scored at 8:25 and 12:21, respectively. Petan fired from the high slot, beating goaltender Olivier Mantha, while Heinonen capitalized on a UAA turnover for a breakaway rush.
MacTavish knotted the game at 11:49 of the third, forwarding Jarrett Brown's shot from the blueline. Chase Van Allen also picked up an assist on the play before Kozun collected his second game winner on the season. Senior forward Blake Tatchell furnished the helper, giving himself a team-high 15 points and 94 career points.
Phillips (9-5-1) was yanked in the final 1:10 of play for the extra attacked, but Mantha stayed strong, stopping three final shots before the buzzer. Mantha improves to 6-6-2 with 32 saves. Phillips turned aside 15, as UAA was outshot, 34-18.
The Seawolves break a four-game losing streak to the Huskies with their first win in Houghton since Feb. 8, 2013 (3-1). UAA will be looking for its first sweep in the Upper Peninsula since Jan. 15-16, 2010 (6-2, 5-4).
