HOUGHTON, Mich. – Junior Brad Duwe netted the game-winning goal giving the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves a 3-2 upset win over the No. 17 Michigan Tech Huskies for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association road sweep Saturday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The Seawolves came back to tie the game twice before Duwe forced a turnover and fired home the game-winning goal that gave UAA its first back-to-back wins since late October. UAA takes four league points on the weekend for 11 total as it improves to 8-6-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the WCHA. The Seawolves won Friday with the same 3-2 score.
With the game deadlocked at 2-2, Duwe, who hasn't scored since the season opener against Arizona State, picked up his second on the season with 5:11 remaining in the third period. UAA was then forced to kill off a penalty with 2:45 remaining, before UAA collected its first road sweep in Houghton since Jan. 15-16, 2010 (6-2, 5-4).
The night started when Michigan Tech's Brett Boeing furnished his first career goal at 6:31 of the first stanza. The 1-0 lead held throughout the first before Jarrett Brown knotted the game at 3:46 of the second with his second tally of the season. Following a 3-on-2 rush, Brown capitalized on Tad Kozun's shot that rebounded off goaltender Matt Wintjes pad. Brown leads Seawolf defensemen with seven points this season.
Kozun furnished his fourth helper of the season on the play, for 12 points – second most on team – while captain Austin Sevalrud registered his third assist of the year.
Tech regained the lead with 21 seconds remaining on a Husky power play when Tyler Heinonen collected his 11th of the season after he redirected Alex Petan's shot from the point at 17:29. The Seawolves then enjoyed a 4-on-3 for the final 1:27 of the period, peppering Wintjes with five shots.
The UAA power play continued into the first 33 seconds of the third, but it was five seconds after the penalty expired that junior Chase Van Allen forged the 2-2 tie. Freshman Mason Mitchell and sophomore Austin Azurdia assisted on the play.
Backstopping the Seawolves to the victory was sophomore Olivier Mantha with 30 saves. Mantha improved to 7-6-2 on the season. Wintjes turned aside 24 shots in the loss. MTU won the battle of shots, 32-27.
The Seawolves return to the Sullivan Arena, Dec. 11-12 to host in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks in Game 1 and 2 of the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup. Tickets available at the door for just $10 or online at ticketmaster.com.
