MANKATO, Minn. – Lopsided scoring chances led the No.1-ranked team in the country Minnesota State to a 4-0 shutout of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, giving the Mavericks the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Center.
Even with a career-high 49 saves by freshman netminder Olivier Mantha and a scoreless first half, the Seawolves (7-15-4, 4-14-2 WCHA) still couldn't find a 'W' and ended their four-game road slate winless. The Mavericks (23-5-1, 19-2-1 WCHA), who won 5-2 on Friday, used a 53-12 shots on goal advantage to stay atop the league standings.
The Seawolves – who controlled the play in the opening minutes – were able to kill off three Mavericks power plays in the first, including 51 seconds of a 5-on-3, but were unable to break Fairbanks local Stephan Williams as the teams went into the first intermission with goose eggs.
Mantha, whose previous career best was 46 at Maine and UAF this season, turned aside all 20 shots in the first period of play. The Mavericks wouldn't crack Mantha until 15:05 of the second frame on their 35th shot of the night. Teddy Blueger gave MSU the 1-0 lead by capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net.
The Mavericks, who had the second-best scoring offense in the nation entering the game, lived up to their ranking and added two power-play strikes in the final period. Bryce Gervais collected his 20th goal of the season at 2:33, before Zach Palmquist struck at 8:03.
The final dagger came on MSU's 50th shot on target, as Zach Stepan beat Mantha, top-shelf at 14:48.
After more than a month away from the Sullivan Arena, the Seawolves return to Anchorage to host ranked Michigan Tech, Feb. 13-14. Game time is set for 7:07 p.m. AST both nights. Enjoy the Valentine's Day Weekend with Me + 3 (four tickets for the price of one) on Friday and 2 for $20 on Saturday.
