LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves men's and women's outdoor track & field teams started the 2015 campaign in style with senior Franz Burghagen posting the best Div. II toss of the young season in the men's javelin on Friday at the UNLV Randall Cunningham Track Classic.
A local of Berlin, Germany, Burghagen furnished a winning throw of 224 feet, nine inches to win the javelin and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships that isn't held until May. A two-time All-American in the event, Burghagen finished runner-up last season after taking third in 2013.
Additionally, the Seawolves received a provisionally NCAA qualifying toss from freshman Tyler Kostiuk in the same event. From Comox, B.C., Kostiuk registered a personal-best of 206-3, good for fourth at the meet.
To join Burghagen with automatic qualification, Kostiuk will need to hit 220-1.
The rest of the Seawolves will be in action tomorrow with the final day of competition at the UNLV Classic.
