ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage was eliminated for the post season Friday when in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks shut out the Seawolves, 1-0 at the Sullivan Arena in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game that doubled as Game 3 of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.
Even with tomorrow night's Cup finale vs. the Nanooks (18-13-2, 14-12-2 WCHA), the Seawolves (8-21-4, 5-20-2 WCHA) can finish no high than 10th in the WCHA standings, thus missing out on the WCHA First Round. Awaiting the outcome of tonight's game were Lake Superior State and Alabama Huntsville, who clinch the final two playoff spots with the UAA loss.
Meanwhile, the Alaska schools still have the Governor's Cup to play for. The Seawolves lead, 2-1 after picking up two victories in Fairbanks back in January. Should the Nanooks win tomorrow night's game, the teams will compete in a shootout to determine the Cup winner. UAA is looking to break a five-year UAF streak with the Cup.
On the ice tonight, the lone goal came courtesy of Tayler Munson, six seconds after a UAF power play expired in the opening stanza. Munson, who seconds before hit the left post, scored at 13:34 with assists going to Peter Krieger and Trevor Campbell.
The teams then skated to scoreless second and third periods, as the Seawolves were handed their sixth shutout of the season. The win broke a four-game winning streak for UAA against UAF, while the last six games between these rivals have been deceived by one goal.
Both squads were scoreless on the man advantage, with UAA going 0-for-6 and UAF going 0-for-4. UAF outshot the Seawolves, 24-22, while UAA had an 8-4 edge in the final period of play.
Playing well was freshman neminder Olivier Mantha. Mantha, who had 80 combined saves in Game 1 & 2 of the Cup, made 23 stops tonight. UAF's Sean Cahill turned aside 22 saves for his second shutout of the season and sixth of the season for the Nanooks.
The teams unite tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. AST. Additionally, UAA will honor its five seniors playing in their final collegiate game.
