NORWALK, Calif. – Freshman Nathan Kipchumba paced the Alaska Anchorage men's and women's outdoor track & field teams Saturday with a Seawolf record in the 800 meters at the 21st annual Beach Invitational at Cerritos College.
Kipchumba's record highlighted the meet as UAA collected six career bests and nine season best on its final day of competition. The Seawolves also competed at the California Combined Events, Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational this week.
A local of Eldoret, Kenya, Kipchumba finished 13th overall with a new school record of one minute, 50.56 seconds in the two-lap race. Kipchumba, who bested the previous record of 1:50.76 from James Pettigrew (March 2009), improved his standings in the NCAA rankings from his previous time of 1:51.25. He will need to reach 1:49.10 for automatic qualification for the National meet in May.
Additionally, junior Rosie Smith posted a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 14.24 in the 100-meter hurdles, one hundredths of a second off the school record (14.23). The Bartlett High graduate finished 13th in the race.
Meanwhile, four other Seawolves furnished career bests – sophomore Alexandra Scott went 12.71 in the 100 meters and senior Haleigh Lloyd furnished a time of 2:14.13 in the 800 meters. For the UAA men, senior Kevin Rooke tallied his career best in the 1500 meters (3:54.63), while sophomore Philip Messina went 1:54.50 in the 800 meters.
The Seawolves will be idle until the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi Championships, April 27-28.
